SCALP CARE DO'S & DON'TS

Scalp health is something my clients and I talk about every day. Neglecting your scalp can lead to a variety of health issues that range from irritating (itchy, flaky, dry skin) to serious (hair loss, psoriasis, and dandruff).

Lots of people think that dandruff is the result of a dry scalp, but it often signals the growth of a yeast-like fungus. Dandruff isn’t usually something that will go away permanently on its own. Although it can go away for a little while, it usually flares back up if you haven’t treated the underlying cause.

This is exactly why I stress scalp health so much! Ignoring seemingly little or mildly irritating issues can lead to more serious health concerns down the line.

Here are some tips to help promote a healthy and happy scalp!

Four Reasons Scalp Scrub Shampoo

Wash your hair less.

Frequent washing strips your hair of its natural oils. Your scalp will start to overproduce oil when it dries out (excess oil is a big cause of dandruff!). Just skipping one wash per week will help!

Use dry shampoo.

Make sure you use one with little to no alcohol content. Alcohol can be drying, which can irritate already dry skin and lead to brittle hair.

Brush often.

Brushing helps promote follicle growth, circulation, and oil production – all things we need for a healthy and happy scalp.

Salon Scalp Treatments.

In-salon scalp treatments get rid of dry skin and remove product build-up, so your scalp will be fresh and squeaky clean while still moisturized and nourished. There are also great scalp shampoos and scrubs available at home for use that are available for purchase in the Shoppe.

Cedarwood and Rosemary Essential Oils

Use a boar bristle brush.

I LOVE these! They distribute oils evenly on your hair and scalp, promote blood flow, and stimulate hair growth while adding shine and decreasing your reliance on styling products. I recommend EVERYONE gets one of these magical brushes! Available in the Shoppe!

Therapeutic grade essential oils*

Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Cedarwood, Lavender, Tea Tree, Lemon, and Lemongrass essential oils are all amazing for your scalp and hair. (Plus they smell AMAZING!). Just add a drop or two to your palm, rub your hands together, and massage onto your scalp (or brush with your boar bristle brush) before bed *ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER WHEN USING ESSENTIAL OILS

Medium Size Boar Bristle Brush

Install a shower water filter or hard water softener.

Hard water or tap water can be a major contributor to scalp and hair issues. Water filters are best because they remove all those harsh chemicals and contaminants that can wreak havoc on your skin and hair.

These little changes to your daily habits and routines can make a huge difference to your scalp’s health. Not only will you feel better, but you’ll enjoy a boost of confidence and healthier hair, too!
